LINKS

There is much to see and do in and around Tighnabruaich.

Listed below are links to some favourite things.

Restaurants
  • An Lochan
Formerly and perhaps more famously known as the Royal Hotel ('The Royal') the renamed An Lochan is home to the Shinty Bar and a fine restaurant. Conveniently, it's also just 100 yards down from (and a short stagger back up to) the house.
  • Colintraive Hotel
Slightly further afield the Colintraive Hotel offers another great bar and restaurant with fresh, local produce. The langoustines in garlic butter are phenomenal. Mains include Bute beef, seasonal meat, fish and game. Well worth a visit, especially when coming or going to Bute.
  • Kilfinan Hotel
Closer to home (a pleasant 7.5 mile drive) the Kilfinan Hotel prides itself on sourcing the best seafood, meat and game from local suppliers. On a sunny day there is an attractive outdoor dining area. If it's wet there is a very nice dining room.
  • Loch Fyne Oyster Bar
Now a national franchise owned by Whitbread it all started here in Cairndow, not too far from Tighnabruaich and worth a trip on the way to Inverary. Reputedly the scene of political intrigue between Gordon Brown and John Prescott it's a good place for fresh seafood. While there pop in to Fyne Ales to pick up some award-winning beer.
  • The Oystercatcher
Past Kilfinan and about 11.5 miles from Allt Beag The Oystercatcher pub serves up a good range of beer and locally sourced food in outstanding surroundings by the water's edge. Eat and drink while the kids play within sight on the beach!
Resources
  • Flickr photo archive
Flickr is a useful site and a great place to store photographs. It has numerous photographs of Tighnabruaich and the surrounding areas showing some of the fantastic scenery. Follow this link for a slideshow.
Entertainment
  • Mobile cinema
For those seeking that Cinema Paradiso type experience in the wilds of Scotland check out the schedule of the Screen Machine Mobile Cinema and watch a movie in a truck!
  • Waverley
SS Waverley, the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer, calls regularly at Tighnabruaich with trips to Tarbert and Lochranza. Surprisingly fast and maneouverable you would think the age of steam-based sea travel had never ended.
Nearby
  • Dunoon
Dunoon is the closest town to Tighnabruaich and offers the usual range of facilities including supermarkets, petrol stations and quite a good swimming pool with flumes etc for the kids. There are also sailings from Dunoon by either Calmac or Western Ferries to Gourock on the mainland.
  • Rothesay and the Isle of Bute
Also close by, but involving a quick ferry crossing at Colintraive (reputedly the most expensive per metre travelled, especially when taking a car!), is the Isle of Bute and the island capital, Rothesay. Famous as the 'doon the watter' destination for generations of Glaswegian holidaymakers Rothesay now has a certain faded seaside charm. There are many attractive beaches and walks and a trip to Mount Stuart house, seat of the Marquess of Bute, is well worth it.
  • Inverary
Slightly further by car but worth the trip is Inverary, an ancient settlement remodelled during the Georgian period under the auspices of the Dukes of Argyll. For the children a visit to Inverary Jail is not to be missed whilst also within a reasonable drive (as part of a day trip) is the interesting underground power station, Cruachan. Learn how to 'turn the screw' and create near instant electricity from water all in one day.
On the water
  • Kyles of Bute Sailing Club
Kyles of Bute Sailing Club welcomes visitors to the area and would be a good port of call for those arriving by sea. There are regular 'Round the Island' [Bute in this case, not the Isle of Wight!] races and other organised events.
  • Tighnabruaich Sailing School
The Sailing School at Tighnabruaich offers RYA-approved courses at all levels for mariners under sail or power. Dodging the Waverley out in the bay as it hoves into view of your flimsy Laser dinghy is an experience not to be forgotten.
On the land
  • Kyles of Bute Golf Club
The nearest Golf Club up at Kames offers a very memorable 9-hole course with some challenging holes and fantastic views. Forget your golf in the South of England come and see what golf is really about!
  • Scottish Golf
Scotland is the home of golf and there are no shortage of courses, several of which are championship grade. Nearby are Dunoon and three courses on Bute (Rothesay, Port Bannatyne, Kingarth). Slightly further afield are championship courses such as Troon and Loch Lomond.
